#5 : The painter

6-9-19

Have you stayed at a shelter before?

No, I have help right now, but I still would like to get my own place.

Have you worked any jobs before?

Yeah, I’ve been doing construction painting for a long time. One time at Home Depot I got faucets on sale and what I did was I went there with my truck to pick it up for my client. I also installed all the baseboards and molding. I did this in stages: doors and frames, molding, casings, baseboards, and cabinets. The cabinets took extra long because I had to scrape off the previous coat and paint on really carefully. And I did a roof window for natural light. I learned how to do this stuff in high school.

Years ago a friend of mine’s father yelled at me because I crashed one piece of tile. I found out after that apparently he was under a lot of pressure. But because of that incident I don’t do tiling.

Some people take shortcuts on this type of construction work, but I always follow the directions. But because I never take shortcuts and tried to correct others who were, people picked on me. Sometimes they would steal my painting tools. Then they stopped referring jobs to me and my boss laid me off because he thought I was getting older and slower. But I’m detailed and I’m proud of my work.

Now I take projects on my own. I have one lady who’s been my client for 10 years and I painted the inside and outside of her house. It took me three weeks because I did it all myself. I also do some handyman work and remodeling bathrooms, but I don’t do plumbing. I don’t work on things I don’t know how to doーI never cheat my clients.
